My father told me, back when I was a little kid and I thought he - TopicsExpress

My father told me, back when I was a little kid and I thought he would be there forever, that one day fear would come along and grab me by the throat. He said it happened to everybody and it didn’t matter how big a house you lived in or how smart you were: this fear was part of life like water and air and would ambush me some day, like the big black wolf with red eyes in the forest that sunk its teeth in the lamb’s neck and carried it away from the sheep. He said if I was lucky it wouldn’t come for a long time but, either way, I should start getting myself prepared for it – I guess I was about seven or eight years old then. He said the only thing to do was to accept it, embrace it even, and keep going because that’s what a real man has to do, survive and keep strong for the others. Then the selfish cowardly bastard disappeared before I could find out who he thought the others were supposed to be. Turns out he was right. Okay, I had survived the highs and lows of combat more times than any normal man should, and I could even admit to myself that sometimes I maybe rode a little too high on that buzz: I was the wolf, but that do-or-die fear is where the deepest kicks are to be plundered, and my hero father was just as greedy for those blood thrills. No, he had something else in mind, and figured I would recognize that honest fear when the time came. https://youtube/watch?v=1gLDJlp_WBs&feature=share
