My father, uncles and grandfather both fought in wars for this country. They did it by choice, but never really spoke of it after. What often came up in conversation, by them and others of their generation was the racial divide that existed when they served and how they were seen as second class soldiers though they put their lives on the line equally as everyone else. This year Ive also met a number of the remaining Buffalo Soldiers Infantry Division who mirror these stories, but also speak about the pride of serving regardless of their treatment. I say this because though the experiences seem to differ, what has been proven to me is that the African Americans who have often chose to go into the military do so knowing that much like outside, life inside wont be fair either. They may do it for themselves, but in the end they tell a very different story of triumph and overcoming difficulty than most if the history books ever will. At the same time they also tell a story of change. For each one of them, my family and otherwise, they helped carve a path for me in life by giving me options to explore careers, demanding racial equality beyond the everyday, and showing that the pride and passion it takes to be a soldier goes so far beyond color. Its not just soldiers of color, but all who have served and are serving, while you may enter the service for yourself, you do us all a much greater service. Thank you, every one of you. This isnt about our government or even the country in general, but your personal sacrifice for the greater good. So to all far and wide who have worn or currently wear the uniform, and especially to all my friends currently and recently serving... Happy Veterans day. Much love, much respect, we salute you.
