My favorite makeup books! (My Top 10 to be exact) I know everyone now-a-days uses youtube and online sources for makeup info but lets be real- a lot of these bloggers are not professional makeup artists and although may have some great product reviews or ideas/pointers you havent thought of previously the makeup masters of our time- celebrity artists, people who own their own mainstream cosmetics lines etc. got where they are for a reason and their books have much more quality information than most can find in a blog or youtube video. Plus they are usually beautiful books you can keep on your coffee table! If you have an interest in being- or are- a makeup artist I love and recommend the following books that I own: Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself by François Nars- the inventor of NARS Cosmetics - this is his 2nd book, the first Makeup Your Mind is also lovely and they are both done in a similar way with images of before and after and a transparent page between to mark what was put where on the models face- a stunning book. Next I love the Retro Makeup books a specialist on recreating vintage looks: Lauren Rennells has a Retro Makeup: Techniques for Applying the Vintage Look and Vintage Hairstyling by Lauren Rennells book both run from the 20s up through the 60s and also contain some history on styling, tools, techniques as well as great step by step images and tips for finding your perfect red lip and doing winged liner- classic staples, she recently released a Vintage Inspired Weddings look book as well! If the history of makeup interests you I absolutely recommend Beauty and Cosmetics 1550-1950 by Sarah Jane Downing this steps much further back in time than the previous mentioned books and has accompanying paintings etc. from different eras to portray the trends it talks about- super interesting and a light read! For more in depth instructional books for modern style looks I love both Jemma Kidd US s makeup books she has 2 great books out Make-up Secrets which I own and love it touches base on EVERYTHING makeup related and even has a small section on skincare - very thorough information - her other book Makeup Masterclass is also very popular but I dont own it. She started out modeling (just like me) and switched over to makeup- having experience both in front of the camera and behind the scenes she has great insight and tricks for doing both your own and others makeup. I also own the book Beautiful Eyes by Rae Morris celebrity artist in Austrailia- she has published many 5 books so choosing one wasnt easy but I decided to go with Beautiful Eyes because Jemmas book went over a little of everything I thought it would be good to have a book that focused on eye looks and it is fabulous! In addition according to some of the reviews some of her books have repeated info and Beautiful Eyes is the eye section extracted from her original book which worked perfectly for me- it not only shows an immense variety of eye looks but how to recreate them step by step. Lastly I went with American celebrity artist Robert Jones who also owns and runs Robert Jones Beauty Academy which I participated in - I was certified through their online academy which I did as a refresher since I was already certified and LOVED the info so invested in his books- he has 6 books total but much like Rae some of the books repeat info so after going through them I have found the following 3 to be the most helpful: Makeup Makeovers in 5, 10, and 20 minutes this book is phenomenal for anyone who works in cosmetics retail or does large workshop style photoshoots with many clients and needs to work quickly, his Makeup Makeovers: Weddings book is great for anyone who does bridal work I found it nice to have the book on hand and allow brides to look and let me know their favorite looks so I have more of a visual guide between us, finally his book Makeup Makeovers: Beauty Bible This book has bits from his other 1st 3 books as well and some small sections of his bridal book meshed into one it has EVERYTHING from tools to application working with different skin tones, eye shapes, face shapes, different methods of contour and MUCH MORE including a terminology section with words and definitions that every makeup artist needs to know. Check them out! xo
