My first Full Marathon race report: Most people know Ive not - TopicsExpress

My first Full Marathon race report: Most people know Ive not done a half marathon, let alone a full. This time around I braved myself to do a FM in scklm. Race morning: Hardly got enough sleep due to the excitement and nervousness. Woke up at 2.15am to get ready and arrived at the train station at 3am, but had to wait for 45 minutes to get onto the train - you phail RapidKL! Finally got to the race venue at 4:10am and had to go around looking for my friends. Met up with Thor Wei Jen and MT Lee but it was also time to get ourselves to the starting line. The gun went off at 4:30am sharp and I started pacing myself at a sub 8 min pace. The inner ankle pain was a little apparent in the beginning but it numbs away after about 1km. What got me excited was that we were also greeted by the DBKL brass band playing gang-nam style to cheer us on. Wei Jen was pacing me all the way till km21 (I was darn lucky to have 2 buddies pacing me for both first and second half of the run). Felt fresh all the way until I hit KM27. Keeping close sight with the 5:30 pacer. Pushed it through without walking until KM30 which was then I had to slow down to walk. Held on walking and running until I bumped into Lee at Bukit Tungku and started pacing him instead. He was suffering from a outer knee pain which could be ITB but we both pushed on (alternating walk and run still). We both were in pain (I was just too tired). We went through easily the last 7km together while he continue to encourage me. I was at one point so painful that I swear that I had tears in my eyes. With Lees constant encouragement. We finally crossed the line together at 5 hours 53 minutes on the clock. We gave each other a job well done gesture and head on to look for Tze and gang. What went well? I was quite discipline in fueling myself. I stopped at almost all water station to make sure I get something to wet my mouth. Also made sure I take anti fatigue pills every 9km to keep the body working. Having running buddies was a blessing... Aftermath? I had chafing at places where i didnt know could have chafing. The legs were probably gonna need resting for the next 2 weeks. Both knees are hurting now. It all went pretty well and as planned, though I was a little ambitious to hope for 5:30 but I guess after all, I now can still brag a little....I have completed a full marathon! Big thanks to all who have cheered me on throughout and of course my wife Tze Ling for the word of encouragement when I could barely imagine myself finishing this...
