My first mentor and poet friend in San Francisco was Laura - TopicsExpress

My first mentor and poet friend in San Francisco was Laura Ulewicz, who founded and ran the I and Thou Coffeehouse on Haight Street. Scores of poets and artists congregated there every day, and, curiously, she had allowed a mural artist to paint a quotation from H.P. Lovecraft on the wall: "That is not dead which can eternal lie..." She gave me my first featured poetry reading anywhere and loaned me money for medicine once when I was ill. I doubt that she made any money there the way we kept reusing the same tea leaves and asking for more hot water, but she made a lot of aspiring writers happy. Unfortunately she gave up on her poetry and retired to seclusion. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Ulewicz
