My first time in Ireland, in 1992, was for 3 weeks(23 days, actually), alone, in the off-season(late March-early April), cold, rainy, not another tourist within a hundred miles, whereby I was forced to make my way amongst them, and for the first 6-10 days, I may as well have been in Russia, so incapable was I of understanding them, especially in the pubs at night(yeah, EVERY night 😁). But every day my ear got more attuned, to the point that by my last week there, it was as if Id been borne there, in, like the smallest fishing village or farming town in Clare or Kerry. I could stand in a pub talking to 5 guys who were speed-speaking & talking on top of each other,....and make out every word. Its gone now, of course, that ability,.....but Im sure that I could get it back again with a little exposure.
