My friend Nesreen shared this with me & it really impacted me . . . it raised a very important question: The one thing I dont agree with this researcher about is that our brains are wired to look for beauty. She didnt articulate what beauty is beyond the mainstream or evolutionary definition. As an artist, I do not see beauty inside of a box. What attracts me is energetic far more than visually aesthetic. Artists will often state that they are interested in beauty. However, my impression of some of the greatest art is that it concerns itself with finding beauty in the mundane. I would even assert that we can find beauty and elegance in the grotesque if we are willing to transcend our principles long enough to search for greater understanding. I have far more to say about this, but I think Im going to hold off for a while. For now, I will say that from an attraction standpoint, I am constantly surprised by where I discover beauty in both men, women, transgender, etc. I have been attracted to fat, thin, medium, tall, short, balanced and imbalanced, loud and quiet, cerebral and emotive, sensual and abstract . . . I think it is the capacity for encounter that invites beauty and that perhaps the beholder is just as responsible for their capacity to appreciate beauty as beyond forces that define beauty. Tell me, how do you define beauty?
