My good friend Marcus Aurelius (actual last name Grimaldi) and I grew up in Atlanta and played music together in middle and early high school. He was two years younger than I was, but musically we had a great connection. Way back in the day, we had a rock/metal band that played in my parents basement called Seven Yards Back (inspired by my 8th grade football coachs advice on where a strong corner should stand in relation to the wide receiver). The band was basically us ripping off Metallica and Iron Maiden, but more importantly, it was us learning how to create music and play with other musicians. I moved away, but we still kept in touch over the years. We would talk about music, what we were into, what we were playing, etc. While going through my metalcore phase in the early-00s, I introduced Marcus to a band called Shadows Fall. Afterwards, I discovered bands like Lucero, Two Cow Garage, and Drive-By Truckers and followed a different path. Marcus just called me to let me that the band hes playing with now (Temple of Thieves) are opening for Shadows Fall in Atlanta in December. I often play guitar for Two Cow Garage, and opened for Lucero last month. Sometimes in the race of constantly trying to get to the next level, find the next gig, get the next fan, learn the next riff, and (if were being honest) make the next dollar, we forget that the whole reason we got into this business is because when we were kids frantically bashing away at our instruments in our parents basements, we fell in love with it. Were still doing it, Marcus. Were playing music, only now we do it for a living. Thats pretty cool. Im really proud of you, buddy. Hopefully Ill see ya in December.
