My good friend and colleague George Shirk queried me about why nothing of note happened on this date in history prior to 1869. So, I did a little more digging and am posting an addendum to my previous On this date in History, Oct. 8. In 314, in the Battle at Cibalae: Roman emperor in the west Constantine beats emperor in the east Licinius. In 451, the Council of Chalcedon (4th ecumenical council) opens. In 876, at the Battle at Andernach: Louis the Young beats Charles the Bare. In 1075 Dmitar Zvonimir is crowned king of Croatia. In 1480, a standoff between the forces of Akhmat Khan, Khan of the Great Horde, and the Grand Duke Ivan III of Russia, resulted in the retreat of the Tataro-Mongols and eventual disintegration of the Horde. In 1492, Christopher Columbus fleet was about 400 sea miles from Puerto Rico. In 1600, San Marino adopted its constitution. In 1604, Supernova Keplers Nova was first sighted. In 1625, Admiral George Villiers fleet sails from Plymouth to Cadiz. In 1633, the Massachusetts Bay Colony forms its first government. In 1690, Turkish troops occupy Belgrade, Yugoslavia. In 1712, French privateer Jacques Cassard is spotted on Suriname coast. In 1740, the Chinese assault Diestpoort Batavia.
