My good friend drew my attention to an article on the VOA yesterday which I would like to share with all Africans especially the young bright things. In the article the suggestions was that Africans from the Diaspora were flocking back home because the West was unable to offer the sort of opportunities that were once the pull factor. Although the case study was a bout the West African country Sierra Leone, the similarities with my own Ivory Coast are striking. Most returnees in Sierra Leone are educated young men and women who supported the current administration when they were in the wilderness of opposition. The returnees expect some kind of payback, sort of reward for their support. The trouble is, the same phenomenon is going on in the Ivory Coast but many returnees have had their initial hopes dashed. Youth unemployment is rampant and unnecessary red tape coupled with a complex of inferiority is dwarfing the enthusiasm of some young entrepreneurs. The key to success for any returnee, seems to be well connected in political circles (what is new hey?) and that is called in the Ivory Coast "Ouattrapage"; a coined word meaning " positive discrimination a la Ouattara, after the name of the current president. Do you experience this phenomenon in your own country in Africa? Please share your views on the issue. Thanks for your collaboration.
