My health story: (dont Google Pictures of the things im gonna mention. Its gross. LoL. Also this is all sort of embarrassing due to the nature of my illness so read no further if you dont wanna know.) So here is a quick snapshot of the last couple months. I had a swollen lump form on the inside of my left buttock. The technical term of the precise location is known as the left butt crack. It wasnt getting better and it became very painful to sit down anywhere. So I checked into ER and they told me it was a peri-anal abscess. Usually they just lance an abscess and drain it but they couldnt pick out the exact location of it cause the swelling was to distributed. Also the surgeon on duty was against lancing because of my Crohns disease and the fact that I had two known Fistulas. Fistulas are these tunnels that form from Crohns sometimes that go through your intestinal walls and all the way down and SOMETIMES out to the surface near your rectum. I dont have that. But after some tests it was determined that a fistula was the cause of the abscess that formed. So it was surgery. A long incesion was made almost all the way to my, well, you know, where the sun dont shine. When the Doctor made the cut he found the opening of the fistula so he put something in called a Seton. Its sort of looks like a piece of thin flexible fishing line. Well they inserted this string like thing and looped it around so the wound cant heal and the pocket where the abscess formed can continue to drain. See this diagram: colorectalsurgeonssydney.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/seton2.jpg Soon I left the hospital but the infection came back so I had a second surgery to clean and drain again. Things have been going well since the second surgery. The infection hasnt come back and the wound is mostly healed but my buttock is disfigured and I will never be able to show it in public again! But wait theres more. My new gastroenterologist I met at the hospital wanted me to get a colonoscopy so we could get a good idea of where to start with my new treatment regimen. My disease has always and only ever been in the small intestine.... or at least I had thought. Well to my surprise the disease had moved beyond that. The Doctor discovered I have two good sized holes in my large intestine. One on the left. One on the right. They could be ulcers or fistulas; each surrounded by little polyps which sometimes could be signs of cancer. I also have a stricture in another part which is a narrowing of the intestine (probably from years of diareah). Finally, I had one last large polyp partially blocking the area where the small bowel connects to the large bowel. The doctor was able to remove it during the procedure. So in the next few weeks I will start back on a higher dose of my insanely expensive medication (insane as in if I didnt have insurance it would cost $6k per month. Or $72000 per year if you prefer.) If my system is not able to heal itself properly it will mean that I need to face having a big surgery where they remove my entire large intestine. So thats whats been going on with me. Im home feeling pretty good for now. My appetite has returned. Im putting on some weight again (I weigh in at 138lbs now). Its been 20 years that I have been dealing with Crohns Disease and im probably at the worst healthwise I have ever been but man I dont feel like I am. I feel pretty good inspite everything and my wife keeps me pumped and invigorated. I feel more passionate about life than I ever have before and im looking forward to all thats still to come. Even if its without my oldfrien the colon A.K A. Mr. Poopy. Woot!
