My heart bleeds for Saint Lucia. My heart bleeds for the lack of a certain sound in the political discourse of our nation. What is missing is no one is talking about nation building. It is missing from our political leaders and it is missing from the masses. Yes we have our political differences but there should be that area of intersection where we hold dear and precious the desire to build our nation; To have a dream and vision for our people; To have a common destiny steeped in love for our county. This is so loudly lacking. We may disagree on how we get there and that could be a significant part of our discussions, but I am not hearing from our leaders, on both sides of the political divide, at least talk of a common dream of nation building. Things seemed to have deteriorated to getting my party in power or keeping my party in power. When was the last time you heard an opposition commend a government for any policy? When was the last time you heard a government take the advice of an opposition? We see our people lay down their differences on the grass roots level when there is a natural disaster and come together to help their neighbors in spite of political color. However, sadly even this is politicized and people are divided. Both with Tomas and the Christmas Eve Trough there were allegations of political victimization or cronyism. This division is killing us. We must be able to meet on common ground for the love of our country. We must be able to have a common goal and vision for our nation. Happy Emancipation Day!
