My heart hurts for this situation for many reasons and on many levels... too much to cover in a Facebook status. But, I would like to make a status about what I believe to be a valuable take way from this situation: 1. If you are a current student in college, or high school even, be motivated and empowered to build a personal support system for yourself as soon as possible. This system should inform, enable and sustain your ability to be safe and healthy (in every sense of the word). It should also have your best interest at heart. 2. If you have a relationship with a current student, find a way to commit to contributing to their support system... even if it is as effortless as helping them carry something across campus. I originally wanted to direct this to Columbia, but ... Columbia is not the only institution that is succeeding as a prestigious university and failing as a miserable school. For future situations like this, because they will continue to happen all over the world, I pray that students will be in supportive communities that will effectively guide them through their justice seeking processes. **Cant post this without affirming my support system that basically carried me through Columbia and the girl who inspired me to put red tape on my graduation cap
