My heart is sad this morning. Actually it has been sad for a while. I am not a there every time the doors are open Christian. I do not believe that our spiritual health is measured by how many churchy things we do. I believe that it is measured by who we are when nobody is looking. To be sure, Christian community is important, and we should not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, ever. But sitting next to you in a service isnt community. Having you in my home, now that is community. Gathering together and doing bible study, meeting you for coffee, listening to you talk about your children or marriage, serving others together, that is what community looks like. I want to know you, but I also want you to know me, the real me. The me who hurts and fears, just like everyone else. No matter how many times we sit next to each other on a pew, you arent going to know that part of me. You might know who I am and I might know who you are, but lets be honest, we dont really know each other simply because we attend the same church service. Come into my home, or invite me into yours and we will build a relationship that will encourage both of us as we talk and spur each other on to keep holding fast to Jesus. I believe the grace of God is personal. The gospel should impact the hearts of people, who in turn impact their families and friends. Those people with their vibrant affection for Jesus, then impact the church and because of that the church impacts the community. If we want the church to impact the world, we dont need to focus people on how many church activities they participate in, we need to train people to focus their affection on Jesus and then free them to follow Him, wherever he leads... and that just may be to a soccer field instead of choir practice.
