My hubby and I just watched the movie The Loving Story. Im assuming that many of you are familiar with it. Its the story of a white man and black woman who married in Virginia in the 50s. It was illegal then to marry outside your race and they were thrown in jail. Later went to the Supreme Court where they won and were able to move back to Virginia to be near their families. Just needed to share my thoughts. As the years go by, I realize more and more how thankful I am for my life and for the circumstances I have been in. Ive had a first hand opportunity to learn about the black race and struggles they have had and continue to have and I have to (in part) thank my husband for bringing awareness to me although, I feel Ive always had an open mind and have been sensitive to others being mistreated or hurt. But living with a man who is black has helped open my eyes even more. Sometimes when Ive driven down the street and see and young black high school or college student with his backpack on and looking so innocent, I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly want to hurt him based on the color of his beautiful skin, or when I see sweet Hispanic children walking to Beach School with their mother, dressed so nicely, with pretty barrettes in the little girls hair that her mom had lovingly brushed and placed for her as I did with my little girl many years ago. I sometimes feel like crying and I just want to go hug them. Some of my family had a hard time with my marriage and some tried to stop me from getting married. It didnt work and I forgave them because they thought they were trying to help me. In the process of them trying and me forgiving, they got to know my children and loved them. I was a good mom and my husband a good dad. And I think they opened their minds and learned some things about themselves also. I continue to learn, each day but I dont understand those who continue to be unkind to people of other races, if not to their faces, behind their backs. I personally forgive you, but ask that you open your mind to being kind and loving to all people. How wonderful to be able to learn and enjoy so many different cultures that God had created for us. Happy Thanksgiving everybody. Sorry if this was so long, you chose not to read it. Love you all...
