My husband has never gotten overly excited about Christmas....at least since Ive known him....he told me once that he loves Christmas the way it USED to be....and that now, he thinks its all about spending money and going into debt for the kids. He told me about one Christmas when he was about nine years old. Back then, he was excited in the days leading up to Christmas, just to run home from school and smell all the good things his mother was baking. At Christmas time, his father would buy a CASE of oranges or tangerines, which was a real treat, as that was the only time of year they got them. He was one of 13 children....every Christmas, EACH child got a new hand knitted sweater, hat, mittens and scarf from their Mom. But one year something very special happened. His older brother Charlie, had bought himself a new jack knife...he wrapped up his OLD knife and gave it to Les, for Christmas. Les says he felt like the LUCKIEST KID in Lincoln. It had only one blade on it that wasnt broken....but the can opener part still worked. He remembers that as the BEST CHRISTMAS ever, and says, he would enjoy Christmas again, if it could be like that.
