My husband just made a good observation regarding usage of chance - TopicsExpress

My husband just made a good observation regarding usage of chance vs risk He said Risk implies danger, whereas Chance sounds more like statistics. If a woman is told she is making a risky decision, there is a hint of judgment, but if shes told there is a Chance of so and so, there is an acknowledgment of the statistics. Doctors rarely talk about the Risks of induction, elective cesarean, artifical rupture of membranes, etc...but if a woman wants to refuse induction/whatever, all too often the conversation quickly turns to the Risks she is taking for herself and her baby to go against the professionals advice. All that said, and having nothing to do w obstetrics, I have to give a shout-out to my orthopedic surgeon. He ALWAYS discusses Chance w me for anything he does. Even when he gives me a steroid injection into some joint, and he says, Of course, there is a chance of infection, just w me piercing the skin, you know. I totally appreciate that honesty. I wish all doctors did likewise.
