My job has four sides: We can be doing inspections. Emergency response. Homeless Encampments. Operation healthy streets, where we patrol Skid Row. The big bucks is in the emergency response where some folks work 16 hrs/day almost daily. The easy stroll is usually the inspections where businesses are visited to insure things are kosher. The most difficult to me are the homeless encampments where we give notice before we come in and go through everything- tossing most for sanitary reasons, removing hazards. Still were disrupting shattered lives and stripping folks of their humble comfort zones. I seem to be walking the streets mostly- down on Skid Row. I have become part of the community and make efforts to know the decent folks that offer welcomes, blessings and just simple Hellos. I told my boss that I like it there when most have complained about the beat. Walking with open eyes and a friendly face, I greet folks and wish them a great day. They do the same. Someone noticing my haircut and complimenting, some one flirting playfully and calling me by the name stitched upon my cop suit. I get thanks often for removing the hazards. I get rewards seeing the smiles on their faces and feel blessed to be in their company, accepted and appreciated.... who could ask for more?
