My little boy is a football nut. Hes had a car in his hand at all - TopicsExpress

My little boy is a football nut. Hes had a car in his hand at all times since he was 18 months old and dreams of owning a 67 Fast Back (I think I got the year right). He loves baseball and NASCAR and can rattle off dozens of sports figures, their numbers, and who they play/drive for. He yells at umpires when he watches sports on TV. He pretends to shoot geese whenever they fly overhead and says, Yummy, whenever he sees a deer. He is proud of his push ups. He likes to punch things when hes angry. But let me tell you something else about my boy: Hes tender and sensitive. He will tell you that he hopes to play in the NFL one day, but his longest standing and most deeply rooted longing is to be a husband and a father. He adores babies and has since he was one. He likes stuffed animals and is ferociously protective of a doll named Buddy hes had since he was 2. Hes even more protective of his little sister and made an arch nemesis of a boy who pretended like he was going to pretend to tackle her. Yes, he pretended to pretend - and Elijah declared war. And then he knocked his clock on the football field. My boy is eerily wise about the world and its people at times. Hes said things that have made my heart jump, made my eyes water, made my spine shiver. He has stopped me in my tracks and left me speechless. He is a rebel. He is a conniver. He fancies himself a spy. He hugs his friends and has a burden that they should all be happy. And he loves babies most of all things in this life. I havent been doing a daily show of gratitude, but want to have one today. Im so grateful for a complex little boy who is frequently self-conscious of his sensitive side and asks me every day if its okay to be the way he is. Further, Im grateful that he has a daddy who says, Yes. Im glad youre that way. Youre an awesome human being.
