My mind cant stop playing through a conversation I had with - TopicsExpress

My mind cant stop playing through a conversation I had with Emerson this afternoon. Im not sure I can capture it just right, but it feels so important. Im taking great liberties in my paraphrasing of her words, but essentially shes concluded that a week ago we were the poorest family in our neighborhood (likely true in the long-time core of old wealth in Sioux Falls) and now we are the wealthiest people (she said luckiest) in our new neighborhood (not true at all, but easy to see the connection as we watch dozens of families make their way to shelters and food ministries a bit down our block tonight.) Its funny how a five year old can move into a home 1/2 the size and give up 1/2 of our worldly goods and still feel like shes the luckiest. Amy and I made the choice to minimize because we felt anchored and swamped by all of the material stuff and the burden of debt. Not because were better, have better priorities or have anything figured out, but because we felt like we were drowning despite being at the best place financially in our lives. But, it appears that by starting to get rid of the stuff holding us back, we may have actually replaced it all with something so much bigger...perspective. Im not sure how long well stay in this neighborhood, but I have a sense that the lesson of this neighborhood will stay with us for much longer. cc: Amy Hyde Weber
