My mother always loved this country, unlike someone that made the statement after the first election term, that she was finally proud to be an American. I heard the following story a million times from my mother. It is 100% true. My maternal grandparents came from Hungary along with my uncle Steve, Aunts Betty and Julia and my mother Marie. It was around 1900-1910. Mom was about 7 or eight years old and was amazed by the sight of the Statue of Liberty. The statue had only been there less than 20 years and already acquired its natural green patina, (tint). The day my grandfather started his job at the deep anthracite coal mines in Scalp Level Pennsylvania he was handed a shovel and was told “here is your shovel you hunkie, get to work”. In elementary school my mom was ridiculed for her accent, but being very bright, she learned four other languages from the other immigrant kids. Granddad later came to Lorain to work at the steel plant and was handed another shovel and was told the same “here is your shovel you hunkie” They or none of us ever got a freebie, welfare or anything else. My brothers served in the armed forces and all my sons also served, two of them in Iraq.
