My mother had all of Jackson Brownes albums but, really, I have no memories of her playing his music around me. That being said, a number of reviewers have name-checked JB in reviewing the new album and so I set about acquainting myself the music of a man whos considered to be a legendary songwriter. My friend Roy recently came around to tune my piano and we were chatting about JB. I said that Id bought a Best Of on iTunes and, having listened to a couple of songs, it hadnt really grabbed me. He told me to listen on Running On Empty and The Pretender. I fell in love with both at first listen but this song, the message, the vocal, the changes, it cuts right through me, it breaks my heart. And, in a moment of synchronicity, I listened as JB sings about the children solemnly waiting for the ice-cream vendor, a childhood image that I also wrote into the song Edina. At a time in our lives when we fight for moments to be true, to be authentic to our heart and soul, I see time and time again that I give myself too easily to those that see some good in me and, while that can bring me pain and oft-times invites the wrong people into my confidence, I will not change who I am. I will not live in fear for another moment of my life. Theirs is a different journey. Ill say a prayer for the Pretenders. x NB Blue Rose Code loves Jackson Browne
