My mother in law mailed me this idea after booking a table at the Priory Inn, Tetbury. Thought it would be a good idea for growers/restaurants of Eastbourne... Barter at the Back Door In line with our commitment to local food, bartering at the back door has been a part of everyday kitchen life at The Priory Inn since 2011. Local gardeners - or owners of nearby allotments - bring us their surplus fruit and vegetables and even flowers for us to use in our restaurant and kitchen. In exchange, we hand-out vouchers to the current market value of the produce which can be used against food, drinks – or even room nights with us at The Priory Inn. The growing year of 2013 was a bumper one for our hardy gardeners and our 40 regular contributors received almost £3,000 in vouchers – the “winner” received £560 and enjoyed family meals throughout the summer! The seasonal produce which has been heavily featured on our menus and specials has been quince, figs, runner beans, gooseberries, plums, all the berries and of course apples! Anyone who lives in the Tetbury area can participate - we just ask that we receive the produce on the morning of harvest and that you are happy to give us your contact details. The only produce we been known to turn away has been windfall apples in the really bumper Autumn years, pumpkins and we cannot take eggs!
