My mother wrote this. Hard to believe this was only 11yrs so, It seems like another life time. Evelyn Williams I had a similar experience. My daughter was heading back to Meridian Ms. And had a pick up truck coming at her in her lane, she chose to continue across the hwy and slid through the grass bouncing head on off two trees. Almost immediately afterwards on the scene was a church group returning from Ms. That the same truck had passed their 5 cars in my daughters lane. They immediately stopped called 911 in that group was a ER nurse and respiratory therapist, emt. They knew what to do to render aid to my daughter and her roommate. They were able to get Lacy the roommates with out trouble and stabilize her. My daughter was seizing and drowning in her own blood, they stabilized her neck best they could until medics arrived. It took 30 min to get her out of the car with the jaws of life. They air flighted them to USA Trauma Hospital in Mobile Al. There they found head trauma brain injury shattered left elbow, fractures to both lower legs tailbone L5 jaw in 3 places right collar bone. Left hand was cut and the knuckle there was pushed back to her wrist. She was in a coma on the vent non responsive to painful stimulus I watched the dr literally stick his middle finger through the cut and pull knuckle back in place before he closed that wound. Then she had 5 in gap in top of head they cleaned then stapled closed. This was all still in ER. She was then transferred upstairs to trauma ICU. There I had many rounds with the drs you see not only her mom also a nurse. We prayed friends family and also stangers prayed.all this started Nov. 16 2003. I stayed at hospital slept on 3 chairs and showered in others rooms that made it out of ICU. The first sugary rods to left leg and external fixator to right leg.next surgery was to left elbow that was shattered into over 40 pieces that took 7.5 hours.next surgery was to put rod in right lower leg repair right heel shattered into over 20 pieces and insert a peg tube. They were prepping her for a nh. Finally after 10 days the head dr had the TALK. there is very little hope she will recover and require 24 hour care a d you need to decide if you want a trach because she will be vent dependent or do you want to turn it off. The doctor was surround by 10 residents at the time. My 5 ft 3 10 lbs self took a step forward threw up my hand up(stop). I told him you will not turn off her vent you will not give her a trach You see my god is the ultimate physician and he had all his guardian angels in place at the scene to protect her. They all looked like they were going g to call a code because this crazy mother wo u led not listen to him but kept telling him God was bigger than him or his team. And went back in the room with my daughter. The mom in me would always tell her I loved her and everything would be ok God was watching over her. Then the nurse in me would take over and I would do my head to toe assessment. One day discovered severe swelling at the right side of her head and neck. They told me it was just dependant edema from the way she was laying. Next visitation I called them back in there and asked them if that was independent bruising that I never saw that in my years as a nurse. So back to another cat scan hair line fracture of C2 and basilar fx.. days and nights came and went no changes pupil checks revealed no changes lights were dim but nobody was home. My family was coming to spend Thanksgiving at the hospital with me. After my firstt check on her for the day. I went down stairs to finish watching the sun rise and have a very deep one in one with God. I began thanking him for the first 20 years with my daughter and how much I loved him. Told him I know he had all those angels there with my daughter for a reason and I know it was not mine to question. I was with him 200% and I would be able to accept however this ended I just wanted a small sign so I could start preparing the others. Went back upstairs family had arrived and also visitation time and rounds time. We all went into my daughters room and gave her our love hugs kisses and tell her Happy Thanksgiving. Then nurse mode kicked started head to toe checking staples the opened her eyes to check and see if any one was home. Remember I prayed for a small sign. Well she was home those eyes so bright and beautiful. I started telling my husband she back shes back. He was so sweet and put his arm around me and said yes baby she is home but with a broken heel two broken legs back neck and elbow it will take her a bit to open the door. The doctors came in head dr still dr negative well she will need 24 hour care and will be years if she will ever take care of herself you need to think of nh so she can get rehab. My daughter started moving about the bed opening her eyes they began Decreasing her sedation. And vent settins where they could remove with my blessing this time .Her first words WHAT ABOUT THE TRUCK by this time I had forgotten it was a truck that started this. I told her daddys truck was downstairs, she said no the truck so then I said Marks truck is down stairs to again she said no the truck. Exasperated I ask her what truck. She replied the truck with the 3 men are they ok. Explained to her they werent hurt to condense the story on Dec 3 they took us over to the college for her to hack a radiation tx to the broken elbow. So while we were waiting I pulled out the cell phone started calling her friends one by one letting them talk to her and one by one she she woke up more a more to the point when we got back to hospital I had to stay in the step down unit cause she was tri g to get up a go. We came home Dec,09 and yes she required the care of a toddler, we went to our weekly check ups and they still said I need to reconsider nh. I stayed home with my daughter as her personal nurse and when we went back to those drs on Jan.18 my daughter pushed her wheelchair into the building past the dr who wouldnt believe and said well she looks good dont guess you need me anymore. My reply nope never really did God Just used you to provide her needs. You see Hes not ready to come back so he needs the hands of others but it was all His work.
