My name is Matthew Dryden, I have wanted to be Paramedic since I can remember. When I was six years old I was staying with my grandmother and she had a stroke and I had to call 911. I remember when the Paramedics and EMTs arrived I immediately felt like everything was going to be okay, an EMT sat with me and consoled me until my father arrived. This one event set the direction of my life. Their professionalism and compassion has set a model for me while treating patients. Throughout middle school and high school I enjoyed Boy Scouts and High Adventure Scouting as well as staffing Boy Scout camps as a Water Front Lifeguard Supervisor and Youth Staff Supervisor for 3 years. I finished Boy Scouts and advanced out with my Eagle Scout at 17. Once in high school I applied to be in a medical program at AACAL. I spent four years in Health Science Technology for three hours a day learning Pharmacology, A&P, Pathophysiology, and Lab Techniques. I worked in Home Health for three years during high school. I was a varsity football player for four years at Tascosa High School in Amarillo Texas and graduated with my EMT-basic, Phlebotomist, and CNA. I became an Explorer-Firefighter my junior year of high school and once I turned 18 and earned my EMT National Registry and became a Firefighter/Operator for Potter County Fire Rescue, a EMT for Dalhart EMS and a Nurse Tech at Coon memorial PRN. I continued to work for the American Red Cross as a Training Specialist for Health and Safety in the Oklahoma Tri State Region. During this time traveling to teach classes even once I went to Oklahoma State University in Stillwater to pursue my bachelors in Pre Hospital Emergency Medicine Education and had a blast in Stillwater! It was bitter-sweet when I had to leave Stillwater to go to Paramedic school and finish my bachelors but I am very excited to get my career going. I still enjoy long walks on the sandy beachs, bubbles baths, and crackers in my soup. If I had any advice for people younger than me it would be to stay in school, and drink your milk.
