My nephew Kent was KILLED by a DRUNK and DRUG IMPAIRED driver 27 months ago. Today the perpetrator who had 2 previous DUIs and other convictions was sentenced to 10 years with 5 suspended and 5 years supervised probation. 2 families occupied the courtroom as the horrific tragedy was relived. Kents and the killers. Both uncontrollably sobbed at the loss of LIFE for KENT and the loss of FREEDOM for the killer. There were no winners as the sentencing was announced. BUT WINNERS emerged as there was a demonstration of true HUMANITY by both families, the judge, the defense attorney and the prosecutor. The killers fiancé took the initiative to embrace everyone in Kents family and gave each a heart wrenching, tearful apology as did his aunt. Seeing KENTs dad, sisters and nephew hug them back made me PROUD to be a member of this very decent FAMILY. The tough but teary eyed prosecutor asked to lead us in a heartfelt prayer circle and lifted us with her humble, kind, eloquent request of the DIVINE. Upon reflection I sense we were all touched by KENTs wonderfully offbeat, knuckle-headed, gentle spirit. And that helps make us ALL a lil bit BETTER. Now, R. I. P. nephew.
