My new novel, DJ Tees is published on 6th June. Heres another little taster from it. Nick is waiting for Jeff on Stockton High Street on market day. *** There were loose groups of unemployed young lads from the economic underclass hanging around, doing not much. With ravaged skin and dressed in a uniform of baggy-arsed tracksuits, hoodies and trainers, they pulled on fags and had their hands stuffed down the front of their pants, playing with themselves, presumably to distract their minds from their meaningless, work- less existence. It didnt bode well for the future. They didnt look like a useful workforce waiting to be employed, they looked more like they were waiting for the Pound Pub to open. All their youthful energy being drowned in cheap lager and strong cider. What a bloody waste. Yet despite being skint and stuck in what looked like a spiral of economic decline, judging by the numbers of pregnant girlfriends they had around, they seemed to be involved in an intensive breeding programme; one which the rest of society was going to have to pick up the tab for at some point. Had society let them down, or were they letting down society? Maybe both. In one way he felt sorry for them, because life didnt seem to offer them much, but then they didnt seem to be helping themselves much either, probably because they were depressed, drunk, stoned or all three. Surely no-one wanted to live such a fruitless, aimless life, but they seemed beyond help. Nick let out a big sigh. Was he wrong to think there was a permanent air of melancholy to the place these days? Maybe it was just him and his state of mind. ***
