Nuclear fusion is the dominant real energy source in our universe and likely can provide more net energy than even matter and antimatter annihilation will ever provide even though matter-antimatter reactions are pound per pound of matter about 140 times higher in energy yield as the best nuclear fusion processes. This may seem ironic at first glance, but recall that it takes energy to run the equipment that makes the very small quantities of antimatter we are currently able to produce. Amping up antimatter production to millions and billions of tons or more a year will in my opinion one day be possible in huge infrastructures placed in solar and stellar orbits that convert the star light to electrical energy to run accelerator apparatus or photon-photon interaction processes which may also produce antimatter in cases where the beam energy densities are high enough. However, the source of stellar energy is nuclear fusion. Even accelerators and beam generators not powered by stellar energy will need plenty of alternatively energy supplies which will best be met by nuclear fusion reactors. All this assumes that we use the Standard Model nuclear fusion pathways. I have come up with some exotic ad hoc fusion ideas that may far out-perform matter and antimatter reactions on a pound per pound basis. These exotic processes are based on additional degrees of freedom for nuclear processes and invoke some exotic physics. I will spill the beans as I mathematicalize the concepts. Regardless, nuclear fusion as we know it is the predominant natural real energy source. So research into fusion reactors and better solar energy harnessing methods can lead us to an inexhaustible supply of energy for all, even if my exotic fusion ideas turn out to be non-sense.
