My old friend Subramaniam Swamy has called on Udhav Thackeray today ostensibly to bring together the Shiv Sena and BJP. He has also said that it is in the interest of Hindutva that the onetime allies should henceforth be more than that. But I think this really masks another one of his moves. With the BJP under Modi blocking all moves by him to become a Member of Parliament via the Rajya Sabha, I suspect he is now angling to become the Shiv Senas RS candidate when elections are due next year. The Shiv Sena usually prefers all cash deals, but sometimes does send mavericks into the RS, particularly mavericks who can also pay. It has in the past sent people like Ram Jethmalani and Pritish Nandy. With Swamy in the RS, he will just be the kind of thorn in the side of the Modi government that it has escaped having so far. I am sure Udhav Thackeray would like that thought. What did Swamy then tell Udhav, who is probably still smarting after the shabby treatment he has received from the BJP in the recent past? I guess it was something like: mere paaon pey ghungroo bandho aur dekho main kaise nachungi?
