My only surviving diary tells me that 50 years ago tonight I went to see this film at the ABC Deansgate in Manchester city centre. The only bit I remember from the picture is someone trying to persuade the Corbett character to drink a mug of awful coffee with the words: Itll wash your sandwich down. Corbett hits back with: I wouldnt wash the boat down with this! Curiously, I record in my diary entry that the usherette who escorted my girlfriend and me to our stalls seats with her trusty torch commented that I was handsome. I have no recall of the circumstances of her flattering observation but I swear to you that my diary doesnt lie. P.S. No jokes please about the cinema employee obviously holding a torch for me or how would she be aware of my looks in the dark.
