My opinion is that there needs to be more emphasis by the PCTA and the hiking community placed on the water situation in Southern California. The West coast is experiencing a very serious drought(a water emergency in fact!) and many of the water sources listed on the water report as reliable or flowing turned out to be dry as a bone! Many of us also learned the hard way just how quickly a water cache can transform into an empty pile of plastic jugs. Not a very pleasant discovery after hiking 20 miles in the desert with your final half liter of water! This is not unfortunate, this is extremely dangerous! What happens next year when the PCT population doubles after everyone goes to see Wild in theaters this December? The Trail Angels will never be able to keep up with the demand and the drought is likely to get even worse! I am not a fear monger but rather a realist who, along with many others, suffered tremendously through the extreme heat and aridity of the Southern California desert this year. On more than one occasion I was sincerely concerned about whether or not I and some others were going to make it through alive or whether we were going to need an airlift out of there! The desert is the desert, yes, but I and many others really felt frightened by the severity of this years water situation. Any thoughts or solutions?
