My partner Lynn and I were having one of our many conversations about the various effects fibromyalgia has on the lives of those who have it and their significant others and how best to manage them. One issue we talked about was confidence, the devastating effect that fibro can have on careers and life in general due to the damage it does to confidence. For Lynn it had a major effect, she was once a high powered business consultant and project manager, advising multinational businesses on strategies, problem solving and project management. Her job required a high degree of mental alertness and the ability to communicate at all levels, speaking at meetings and seminars. For Lynn it wasn’t just the pain and inability to function physically that ended her career it was also the cognitive dysfunction, the loss of memory recall, jumbled words, inability to reason efficiently to solve problems amongst other effects. This for Lynn has been a major issue but like the pain and other issues, we work together in ways to manage and combat the effects of fibro and each year there are significant improvements in all areas. Our talk made me wonder, what effect has fibro had on the confidence of other people with it and how they deal with it? ~P
