My personal view & share [So yes before you read- It really bothered me, so I had to write about this issue.]: Would you feel comfortable impersonating another person? In sharing this piece, I hope it will be an awakening for others to fight back when an unknown or possibly a familiar face tries to run or square off your masterpieces. In sharing a similar issue this past Monday, I received a few backlashes, giggles and raised eyebrows in my FB inbox from those inclined to believe I overreacted. Why? Each one of us has something to contribute in life. So the real thought is not whether I overreacted, but why should I not be concerned. In the case of Bassey Ikpi, it seems a part of her online identity, and writings are being used from an unknown person. Yup, Ms. Bassey has an unauthorized copy-cat using writings and keeping her alias basseyworldlive (dot) com. Back end of story, someone is cybersquattering under her previous domain name and using her data, materials and bio. For years, I would read the works, artistic expressions, spoken words from the REAL BasseyWorldLive. The web was her personal library, collection of personal essays about her world, capturing real-time. The opportunity finally came eight years ago; I was working on a project that allowed me to see Basseys live performance and meet with her in person. It was incredible to see she is such a down-to-earth person, guarded, yet receiving, and clearly paints her visions and willingness to share a few unspoken thoughts and life lessons. She wears many hats such as, presenter, poet, spoken words artist, mental health advocate, and founder of The Siwe Project. Mystically connecting with the world, can have its bittersweet moments but at what cost. She is a phenomenal woman full of words even her sought out identity thief cannot escape using her works.
