My slow farmer brain can think of three reasons why we have such high poverty and unemployment in South Africa. Some 75% of our fellow countrymen live in poverty because we the people were sold three great lies way back in 1994: 1. We the people must protect the gains of the rich (approx 99% white South Africans) and implement economic policies that make them richer. The reason: if you make the rich richer, the trickle-down effect will make everyone rich too. 2. We the people must allow the government to privatise SASOL, ISCOR, our roads, water, electricity, etc. The reason: government is too stupid to run these operations and the private sector can do this more efficiently thereby guaranteeing low costs of energy, transport, construction, etc, or collectively the cost of living. 3. We the people must leave the drafting of economic policies up to those economic experts who know what they doing. The reason: we too stupid to understand these things. Well if we the people are really serious about addressing poverty and unemployment we need to do three things: 1. Reject trickle-down economic theory because it’s just that- a theory and a very bad one at that based on no science or best practise. 2. Reject and reverse privitisation because it has not kept the cost of living down but rather increased it thereby increasing unemployment and poverty. 3. We the people must have a real dialogue on the economy. To do that we must equip ourselves with basic economic knowledge. But don’t read Karl Marx, or Thomas Pickety or any such heavy books that can weighs us down with stats and information. Start by reading Ha-Joon Chan’s latest economics handbook “Economics the User’s Guide”.
