My songwriter friend David Hanners, had this to say after election day. My only comment on the election results: In the span of a mere 45 years, Ive seen the U.S. go from being a country that put men on the moon, sent probes into the unknown, unlocked the human genome, established a cabinet-level agency to protect the environment, fed the world, etc., to a place on the verge of being a Third-World country with crumbling roads and bridges, a place ruled by rightwingers who think compromise is a dirty word and seriously think the Earth is 6,000 years old and put their faith in some bozo who thought Iraq had WMDs but scoff at the notion that the overwhelming majority of the worlds experts believe climate change is real and humans are a major cause. I used to take the long view, believing that American politics was cyclical, and what rightwingers screwed up or took away, progressives would be able to fix or give back at some point in the future. But guys like the Kochs and Adelson and the Waltons have bought that future and they wont give it back lightly. Hey, they spent a lot of money for it, and they want a return on their investment. I wouldve thought that something like the return of Jim Crow voting laws wouldve turned protesters out to the street in droves, but I was wrong. Maybe the would-be protesters were too busy/tired after working their three part-time jobs (without benefits) to go out and complain about how legislators want to make it easier to buy guns and harder to vote. All I know is the path is not sustainable, but I dont know what the tipping point is.
