My take on Mike Sonko. I have watched the clip where Mike Sonko puts the presidents call on speaker phone. I have seen the pictures of the first time Nairobi senator in a funny outfit (torn jeans) while at a function with the president. The reaction on social media makes a conclusion to the effect that Sonko is not according the president the Respect he deserves. But I disagree In the first place, what does, RESPECT mean? What is the overall societal behavior that expresses a show of respect? Are the same standards of defining Respect granted to all leaders no matter how they have behaved in the past or the present? Sonko respects the president and these two events do not point to anything contrary to that. The online dictionary defines Respect as a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements. Within the context of the above definition, Sonko in fact, is demonstrating a high regard, a respect for the president and what he is capable of doing. Did the president deliver on what Sonkos call was all about? Heck he did!! This is the by-product of that prevalent Respect; that there are results to show for it. In addition to the above, Robert Bolton in his book People Skills notes the following about Respect: Respect for another person is an attitude conveyed by specific behaviors: The way you listen to other, look at other, your tone of voice, your selection of words......are what conveys respect From the above, it therefore safe to conclude that Sonko operated within the constants of what defines Respect. He has a relationship with the president and we should let it be! We like making things so complicated. Things are supposed to be simple? By the way, those fleecing Kenyans billions of shillings wear suits and ties, put on designer labels and speak with their brokers in hushed tones on secure networks for the public not to know. Who would you rather?
