My thought for the day (so help you all! :) ) I just read Louise Pennys FB status update, and cant help feeling the stark contrast between her ilk and another stream of authors who push to write faster, shorter, thinner-plotted, simpler books.... designed to be consumed like quick fix candy that keeps readers jonesing for the next hit. And yes, designed to be flogged in bulk and cheaply. Granted, the products are for different markets, different kinds of readers and consumers ... and there is NOTHING wrong with writing fast and getting it out there even faster to serve that need, and to make a good living while at it! But ... as a Reader, I am truly heartened when I see genre writers like Penny still devoted to craft, and fermenting, and layering, and the complexities of plot and character and life. Yes, good books can be written fast, but can you truly create those layered works at the same speed ... should one even be trying. Or is it just different strokes, different folks, the difference between a cupcake and and a complex .. I dunno .. tiramisu or four course meal with paired wines? What do you think? Do you like to dabble in both as a reader, and/or author? Or is this just recipe for stress? * My weekend read is THE ALIENEST, by Caleb Carr ... which put in this frame of mind
