My thoughts on Gentrification- When people were shitting on nyc - TopicsExpress

My thoughts on Gentrification- When people were shitting on nyc moving out prior to Gentrification, guess who moved in when all was quiet? Developers and owners. When people were afraid to go north of 96th street, thats when the shopping spree happened again. Long before they called East Harlem the upper east side and fancy brokers now claiming these undiscovered gems. Psffff. I remember Hells Kitchen when nobody wanted to be there. Different story now. Next is the Bronx, East New York, and Second Ave. Soon you will see a glowing spread in the New York Times about how the Bronx is New Yorks Undiscovered Suburb. Yeah right. Did you see it when it was called the Burnt Down Bronx? Where landlords would set fire to their own buildings to collect insurance money as crack houses thrived? Now am I mad at Gentrification? No. Its been happening since the 30s starting in places like Chelsea. And if you rent, you do not own. So when I hear people say They own our neighborhoods. I respectfully disagree. Things will shift. Did you want to move to nyc in the Koch or Dinkins era? Nope. Gulianni- yep. Bloomber era- Yep. Soon as the bubble of affordable housing comes into the picture watch the waves come in talking about I never left. yeah ok.
