My very first Shabbat in the land of Israel and it was everything I had hoped for! A siren went off in the city signaling the approaching Shabbat in the land! And then something amazing happened: everything shuts down! No bus service, stores close, limited taxi service the land quiets down! At the Hostel where we stayed many of the residents joined in the the celebration of Shabbat together! The gentleman who opened the service blessed us with the explanation of God creating the world and resting on the 7th day and sanctifying that day for all and for all eternity! He told everyone who maybe never experienced Shabbat; that it was a time to celebrate and to chill! He explained that in ancient times they treated the water with the wine to purify it so wine represents purity. He prayed the blessing over the wine and the bread after the candles were lit and explained about the double portion falling after the children of Israel left Egyptian slavery and were in the wilderness. What a wonderful light to all the nations! An entire nation of people faithful to honor Gods holy Sabbath day!
