My worry today is the threat to liberal thought, to plurality and diversity. The liberals need to reach out to larger sections of society. I commend the electronic and print media and Bollywood for the liberal stance that has normally been taken by them. But these efforts must be backed by an effective political leadership that can sell these ideals to the masses. The BJP with all its pretentions of respecting pluralism is unfortunately so closely tied to conservative orthodox elements that I fear the future with the rise of the Modi phenomenon. Shekhar Gupta has recently written a wonderful piece on this subject in the recent India Today carrying the photo of the HRD minister.
