M’membe: How the Mighty Have Fallen Six years ago, Fred M’membe, for selfish reasons, using his Post Newspapers, tried to impose the unpopular and politically naive Ng’andu Peter Magande upon the MMD as it’s candidate in the presidential by election that arose following the untimely demise of Levy Mwanawasa. Magande had no political constituency both in the MMD & national level, flotting him as a presidential candidate would have mean’t certain defeat for the MMD considering how popular Sata was at the time. Seasoned politicians like Ben Tetamashimba (MHSRIP), Mbita Derrick Chitala and Mike Mulongoti among others understood this fact very well. In chosing Rupiah Banda, they new that MMD would only return power if they elected a candidate who could unite the party and bring something to the political table – Eastern province. What followed was a sustained campaign of insults, propaganda and lies against all those who supported Rupiah Banda in the MMD by The Post. They were labelled corrupt, tribal and of questionable character by the the ‘saint’ Fred M’membe. The MMD elected RB as it’s candidate in the 2008 presidential by election and he went on to be elected Zambia’s fourth Republican president. Fast forward 6 years later, Fred was back at his evil schemes. Having gone to bed with Michael Sata, who had since been elected Republican President in 2011, M’membe sought to cement his control of those who held political power. He knew Sata was was his own man who couldn’t be controlled and manipulated easily. Having learnt the lesson of imposing an unpopular candidate upon a mass party, Fred knew that for him to gain control of the PF party and consequently the government, he needed to work within the party structures to impose a puppet leader who would be unswerable to himself. In Wynter Kabimba, the arrogant erstwhile PF secretary general, M’membe found that puppet. Having been rejected twice by his own clansmen in mwembeshi, Kabimba’s political relevance in the PF was dependant on Sata’s benevolence. It was the Sata who had appointed him to his positions in the party, government and parliament. However, Kabimba’s arrogance, divisiveness and arrogance had rendered him repugnant to the general membership of the party. It was only out of love and loyalty for Sata, his benefactor, that they respected and obeyed Kabimba as there SG. His arrogance and pomposity over the constitution making process did little to endear him to the masses. Within a space of three years Kabimba had moved from being Sata’s blue eyed boy to the most hated politician in the the country; the massive country wide celebrations that followed his dismissal from party and govt by Sata are proof of this. Once again, M’membe has got his calculations wrong. His selfish schemes to gain control of political power have come to a terrible crash. What is left for the once mighty Fred M’membe is to bark like a paranoid rabid dog at those who have out witted him at his own game. What remains of Kabimba? Only God knows. But one thing is clear, he has become irrelevant to M’membe’s machinations to control political power. It is only a matter of time before M’membe dumps him the way he dumped Ng’andu Peter Magande – like a used condom. “How have the mighty fallen!” Anonymous Contributor zambiareports/2014/09/05/mmembe-mighty-fallen/
