NASA has launched rockets from the Marshall Islands that resulted in a pretty, firework-like display as part of an experiment to determine what disrupts radio waves. The Equatorial Vortex Experiment (EVEX) mission consisted of two rockets taking off, releasing a tracer of naturally occurring compounds. This tracer was crucial to understanding neutral wind, which has not been studied in this way before. Previous data suggests that neutral winds are part of what cause ionospheric storms. Information from this mission may allow scientists to get advanced warning on these storms that disrupt satellite communication and GPS signaling, allowing them to plan accordingly.
