NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK (NAN) URGES CONGRESS TO RAISE THE FEDERAL MINIMUM WAGE April 30, 2014 (New York, NY)—National Action Network is disappointed that the vote in Senate to increase the minimum wage did not pass and strongly urges Congress to work to raise the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage would boost wages for 28 million Americans across the country, 4.12 million of which are African American workers and 6.8 million Latino workers, who together make up roughly 39% of the affected population. It is time for Congress to pass a bipartisan policy that solves this critical issue. As a nation we must all acknowledge that no one who works a full time job should have to live in poverty. The costs of living continue to rise and the minimum wage has not kept up. It should not take us five years to adjust pay to keep up with the rising costs of covering the most basic of needs. Congress must take action to support individuals and families to have a better opportunity to support themselves. We will continue to fight for this issue and legislation that supports Americans in moving out of poverty. ###
