NATIONAL APPLE PIE DAY What is known to many as “America’s favorite dessert”, is celebrated annually on May 13th by millions across the country as they enjoy a delicious piece (or two) of apple pie on National Apple Pie Day. The first apple pie recipe printed was in England in 1381. The list of ingredients included in the recipe were: good apples, good spices, figs, raisins, pears, saffron and cofyn. (the cofyn is a casing of pastry) Apple pie was a common food in eighteenth century United States homes and although they had been eaten long before the European colonization of America, “as American as apple pie” is a saying in the United States, meaning “typically American”. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, apple pie became a symbol of American prosperity and national pride. In 1902, A newspaper published an article that declared “No pie-eating people can be permanently vanquished.” Writings tell us that during World War II, when journalists asked American soldiers why they were going to war, their reply was: “for Mom and apple pie”. In 1970, advertisers used the patriotic connection with a commercial jingle” baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet”. There is a community in New Mexico named, Pie Town, which was named in honor of the apple pie. There are many great apple pie recipes available and even though most people already have their “ol time favorite” it is always fun to try a new recipe every once in a while. Following is a “tried and true” recipe, for you to try, called “Perfect Apple Pie” pillsbury/recipes/perfect-apple-pie/1fc2b60f-0a4f-441e-ad93-8bbd00fe5334
