Around 80 poets, playwrights, essayists, and fictionists from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao are set to attend in this year’s Taboan which carries the theme “Winds and Waves, Wars and Words.” “Taboan, which literary means the marketplace in Bisaya, seeks to serve as an avenue for the academic exchange of ideas among the country’s writers that will help hone their respective crafts and address issues currently affecting their field,” Mallari explained. The February 24-26 gathering features forums, lectures, a book fair, literary reading, performances, arts and crafts exhibits, cultural tours and other satellite projects. Topics that will be discussed include Sagip Kabataan: Using Literature in Disaster Areas, The Natural Life of the World: Translation and Preservation, Utopia and Histopia: Imagining the Future, Save by the Web: Using the Internet to Revive Local Literature, and Keeping Afloat: Ang Pagsusulat bilang Hanapbuhay. Serving as the highlight is an awarding ceremony for outstanding writers across the archipelago. “Taboan serves as one of the main activities of the Philippine Arts Festival (PAF) which is an annual event celebrated every February in time for the National Arts Month,” Mallari added. PAF highlights Filipino ingenuity in architecture, cinema, dance, literature, music, dramatic arts, and visual arts. This year, the festival is anchored on the theme “Art on the Edge” which focuses on art for healing activities and promoting the advancements achieved in different art forms including innovations, modern evolution of art, and the artistic creations in the peripheries. news.pia.gov.ph/index.php?article=551390803797
