NEED A QUICK READ FOR LUNCH? THE PENALTY FOR FAILURE IS DEATH In Moscow, the head of the KGB, Yuri Andropov, is about to make good on his threat to purge the G-9 section responsible for Crissima. His decision is prompted by an urgent message from a KGB field agent in China. “CIA/Black Ops in Kashi. UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter parts by truck to Kashi. China to allow CIA access to Kyrgyzstan. CIA to extract agent Crissima.” Andropov is furious. From his years of experience, he knows Crissima has switched sides. Her extensive knowledge of the KGB’s extensive network of agents in Europe and the United States presents a grave danger to the KGB, his country and to himself. He also knows Khrushchev offers no tolerance for failure and the penalty for the loss of Crissima is assuredly death. To save his own skin, he cannot at all cost, allow Crissima to reach the United States.
