NEW BOOK ON J. E. B. STUART RELEASED AUGUST 17, 2013, Meadows of Dan Virginia Folk Festival For Immediate Release July 31, 2013 Laurel Hill Publishing is pleased to announce the publication of “The Dear Old Hills of Patrick” J. E. B. Stuart and Patrick County Virginia by Thomas D. “Tom” Perry. This work compiled from previous writings and books combined for the first time into one source with new material added and other material revised to give the reader one place to learn from this work based on a lifetime of research over the last twenty-five years on the subject of Civil War General James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart, his family and Patrick County Virginia. This book is the history of the Stuart Family from their arrival in North America in the 1700s coming into the Chesapeake Bay and up the Delaware River. The migrated west across Pennsylvania and down into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia before finally arriving in Patrick County in the mid-1800s. Archibald and Elizabeth Letcher Pannill Stuart came to the land along the Ararat River on the land where William Letcher, grandfather of Mrs. Stuart lost his life in the American Revolution. It is also the story of Archibald Stuart’s grandfather, who fought at Guilford Courthouse. Archibald Stuart, a lawyer and politician represented Patrick County in almost every elected office. He and his wife raised eleven children on their 1500 acres along the North Carolina border near Mount Airy years before Andy Griffith made it famous as Mayberry. Chapters about the lives of both parents are included with connections to the Laurel Hill Farm, where on February 6, 1833, James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart was born. This book details the life of the Civil War General J. E. B. Stuart, who commanded Robert E. Lee’s cavalry in the Army of Northern Virginia from 1861-64. Stuart attended school in southwest Virginia including two years at Emory and Henry College before graduating from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. Stuart served seven years in the U. S. Army before resigning to offer his sword to the South. He lost his life after receiving a wound from one of George Custer’s men at Richmond in May 1864. “The Dear Old Hills of Patrick” tells the story of the Laurel Hill Farm after the Stuart and the efforts to preserve 75 acres beginning in 1990. The book includes driving tours from Stuart, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Mount Airy along with a walking tour of the site.
