NEW DELHI, August 30, 2013 Prominent Muslims join Kejriwal’s party MOHAMMAD ALI Several prominent Muslim activists and intellectuals here on Thursday joined the Aam Aadmi Party ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. Among them are social activist and former Janata Dal national secretary Irfanullah Khan; prominent educationist Firoz Bakht Ahmed, who is the grand nephew of Maulana Azad; and ex-Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union president Mashkur Ahmed. Over a hundred alumni of Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia also joined the party. Though AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has been interacting with the minority community in the Capital, this was the first public event marking their entry into the party-fold. They may not have mass electoral following but the new entrants constitute an influential group among Muslims. Firoz Bakht Ahmed said due to the present political culture, Muslim leaders, clerics and even petty politicians are getting richer by the day while their community languishes. Speaking during the event, Mr. Kejriwal said he had never believed in the policy of appeasement of Muslims but advocated equal opportunity for all communities. Party leader Yogendra Yadav said: “Muslim politics in the country is changing but the politicalthekedaars are quite concerned and want to prevent this. While those who indulge in politics of religion believe that Muslims and other minorities are tenants of this country, the so-called secular party wants Muslims to live under the fear of riots.” “We need to come out of the politics of tokenism, enslavement, fear and hypocrisy,” he said. Mr. Yadav warned that the Modi model, which the BJP was trying to sell to the nation, would be dangerous not only to Muslims but will threaten the very idea of India. thehindu/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-newdelhi/prominent-muslims-join-kejriwals-party/article5074076.ece Jamia_Millia_Alumni_directory
