NEW RCP K-5 Q&A: Thank you for the 150+ posts this topic has generated on the N/NE and NE enrollment balancing FB pages. Here is a Q&A format summary for folks who may not have had the time/patience to read all the posts (sorry for length - lot to summarize): Q: Do people like the New RCP K-5 idea? A: Yes. Different people might like different variations of the idea, but it strikes a lot of people as a sustainable element in relieving BCS/LH/Alameda overcrowding. Q: Are there any important open issues? A: Yes. The proposal has the New RCP K-5 feeding Beaumont. Rigler is already there, Scott might like to be there (post-reconfiguration to K-5), so this needs to be addressed over time and in coordination with Beaumont, Rigler and Scott (and RWH, the other likely home for Rigler, Scott and/or New RCP 6-8 graders). Regardless of where the 6-8 kids go, no 6-8 kids are switched to a new high school. Q: What about making the New RCP a K-8? A: This is possible, but RCP maxes out at around 550 kids. For a K-8, that means you only get two classes per grade (18 classes, 540 kids total at 30 kids/class). This could be too small for a quality 6-8 program. As a K-5, the same 540 kids give you three classes per grade. A K-8 would also be almost-overcrowded-again right away whereas a K-5 would leave some room for future growth. Q: Can Scott families and/or RWH families go the New RCP if they want to? A: Yes, if there is room and it does not undermine Scott or RWH. But we think the New RCP will be filled by the kids that have to be moved to relieve the BCS/LH/Alameda overcrowding. We hope Scott will get relief by converting to K-5 and sending 6-8 to Beaumont or RWH, assuming that is what Scott wants. Q: What high school does the New RCP K-5 feed into? A: Grant. The New RCP area has always fed Grant and is closer to Grant than Madison. We do not want to be forced out of our not-crowded high school at the same time we are being forced out of our over-crowded K-8. We hear the voices on getting Madison’s enrollment up. We hope that other Grant cluster families will come forward with ideas of how they can help Madison reach that goal.
