NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS Many of you know this, but in case you dont - I am a recovering drug addict... going on 9 years now! In my world that really doesnt mean anything accept this - with 9 years of sobriety, the odds of me falling off the wagon are pretty slim. The choice is mine to use or not. God (along with NA, AA and other amazing groups) gave that choice back to me years ago. I dont take that lightly. It was a long, hard road to get to where I am today - but Im here and Im enjoying it very, very much. With that said - Addicts only ever have today. And Im grateful for that. Tomorrow will come and go, with its own set of issues, problems and surprises, but the fact of the matter is - I dont need to worry about tomorrow today. New Years Resolutions? Im not making any... The problem with New Years resolutions is they are mostly expressions of hope rather than actual plans of action. Whats the old saying... You cant know where youre going if you dont know where youve been - Something like that. It sure sounds profound! Imagine if General Motors were to build a car without a plan. Would you want to buy such a vehicle? How about if a carpenter built a house with no planning? How would this turn out? Now, as I consider my recovery... One of the important aspects of using cognitive methods for recovery (or any other purpose) is to utilize goals. Goals are not challenges; our challenges exist in the NOW. Goals are simply a preference for what we would like to accomplish by a future date; goals represent a desired outcome. I dont have any Resolutions for new years. But I do have goals. Business goals, personal goals and yes - even recovery goals. As I sit down to create my goals, my thoughts are focused on Desired Outcomes, rather than wishful thinking. After looking back on everything Ive accomplished in 2014 (with the help of my amazingly strong, beautiful, smart best friend... my WIFE!) I cant help but to raise the bar on 2015 and look towards setting even higher goals, higher expectations (aka desired outcomes). Ones that would transend time and space - goals that, if reached, would leave a lasting impact on the world around me. One of my favorite verses in the bible is... I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. - Philippians 4:13 It doesnt say I can do some things or if its Gods will - it says I CAN DO ALL THINGS. In 2015, Im cashing in on that promise. 2014 was an amazing year for me personally. But Im not done. Ive got some huge goals for 2015 and the most exciting part of all this - Ive done this before, there is no ceiling for me, no end of the road, no task to great - no mountain to high... even if I run out of road, Ill make more and keep going! --- Brining my family and the ones I love along for the ride :) As I sit down to plan out my desired outcomes for 2015 - Im reminded of all the amazing family and friends in my life that make this life worth living. Heck, you make it better than just worth living, you make me a better person! Thank you for that. Resolutions are great and I get it - but goals are the things that, if reached, can change the trajectory of life as we know it! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! P.S. By the way... in 2015, Ill be taking over the world, if you want in - let me know and Ill save you a spot in the WINNING section! :)
